There's a tree in my back yard. It's twisted. It goes up, then curves down in a U and goes back up. It's a beautiful tree and I love it because it's mine. I loved it even more because it's broken. I've had it for over a year and it's still growing taller and stronger. No one expected it to last that long. My other trees have withered.

If there's a metaphor there, it smacks too much of irony.

Yeah. No one wants to have shit happen to them that happens in books. It's all adventure til you lose an eye. Irony's only good for other people, yeah.
