Victor reads The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Grouchy Ladybug, and Where the Wild Things Are (thrice, twice, and five times respectively) for the girls, and she gives them kisses goodnight. Then she reads part of a motor manual for Jude (yes, but he requested it), and tucks him in, and then Anya starts crying and she has to go put her back to sleep (Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you See, read four times).

By the time she makes it to the couch, it's nine-thirty and she's yawning.

Cole's working on mending a hole in her hero costume, because it was there and needed done, and he has steady hands. "Everyone safe in bed?"

"Everyone's okey dokey," she says, rubbing a hand over her temple, at the seed of a headache that's been threatening to start all day.

He watches her quietly for a moment, analyzing those little movements, reading what her body language has to say. "You seem to be doing a little better."

[victormakesart]

"Hangin' out with April really helped. So has the village." She stretches out her legs, feeling the ache of her muscles like a tartness on her tongue, she feels like sour tastes. "I still can't look at Jude without wanting to cry," she admits. "He's right the size they were. But, in their universe, there's a heaven. That means, I mean, they had to've gone there."

"I'm sure they did." He doesn't know if that's true, but if she believes it, that's all he needs.

[victormakesart]

"Yeah, definitely." She picks at her lower lip. "So I keep thinkin' about that. I want to go to the planet and save everyone."

"You know you can't." It would be impractical at best, and suicidal at worst.

[victormakesart]

"Are you sure? We've saved worlds before...."

[backinthsaddle]

"Yeah, but not like that." He knows it's a harsh fact of reality that sometimes it's not possible to save everyone, and it's a fact she often refuses to accept.

[victormakesart]

"But wouldn't it be irresponsible, to leave them to themselves," she asks, softly, scooting just a bit closer to him so she can make a nuisance of herself and take his hand while he sews.

"You can't always force people to do what you want them to do." He stops mending the cloth, mostly because he doesn't want to accidentally stab her with the needle, and pokes it into the pincushion. "What could you do?"

[victormakesart]

"I dunno. Save all the kids, for starters." She rubs her thumb over his knuckles in small circles.

"All the kids in the entire world? By yourself?"

[victormakesart]

"Maybe other folks can help too."

[backinthsaddle]

"Victor... I'm not trying to say that you should forget about those kids. They deserve to have someone remember them. But unfortunately I don't think it's possible to save every single person."

[victormakesart]

A long pause, as she gets what she wants to say in order, thumb now brushing against the side of his hand. "I know that in my head. Kind of. But the rest of me just wants to go in there, march right in, and save everyone."

"I know. And it's not a bad thing that you feel that way."

[victormakesart]

"That feeling takes over, you know? I just keep thinkin', I could organize a team, storm Los Angeles...."

[backinthsaddle]

"And then what?"

[victormakesart]

"Save everyone. Then go to Burbank, work on saving people there."

[backinthsaddle]

"That's not a plan, that's an idea." He knows she sometimes has poor impulse control when it comes to things like this, and he wants to make absolutely sure that she isn't going to run off and try to talk down the monsters without any solid backup plan.

[victormakesart]

Her eyebrows make that frowny shape, and so does her mouth. "That's true. And I can't just go and save every world when I find out they're in danger." She gives him a this-is-something-you've-said-to-me-so-I-am-repeating-it-so-it-seems-like-I-understand look.

And he gives her the I-know-you're-pretending-to-humor-me look in return. "That doesn't mean you can't help, but you've got to play by their rules."

[victormakesart]

She looks a little sheepish, kisses his fingers. "So if it comes down to it, fighting for LA... if that's what the other people who live there want to do, can we help?"

"That depends on what the plan is. And what kind of help you can even give."
