Between work, preparing for the new baby, being a dad, more work, work work work, and writing Batman fanfiction (a hero's got to get her kicks somewhere) Victor hasn't had much time for anything else.

She's never thrown a proper baby shower, so she's really glad for April's help. Though, it's not quite a proper baby shower.

Her apartment is draped with color, forget pastel blues and pinks and yellows that look like a marshmallow Peep's intestines. Brilliant, bright turquoise, green that looks like it was snatched off of a jungle plant, gold baubles hanging from the light fixtures.

Forgot to mention, the lights are off and the guests are crouching down behind the couch, huddled in the kitchen, shuffled behind lamps and curtains.

April can relate to always having weird dreams, her psychic voices communicate with her the best... while she sleeps.

"Marshmellows, huh?"

"I think we have some. As well as stuff for s'mores. Have you ever had a s'more? They're the best."

"I have, actually. Rose introduced me to them during my first week on the TARDIS. S'mores sound great." Especially since they also contain chocolate.

"S'mores sound awesome." April chuckles. It has been such a long time since she had one. And she doesn't think Jonathan has yet.

She gets down on one knee in front of the couch, slips out one of her emergency kits, takes out a small container of sterno, and slips the kit back where it came from, and beckons the two of them to the kitchen. She sets the sterno up on the counter, bustles about for the marshmallows, the chocolate (oh she always has candy in the house, always), and the crackers.

Jack looks at the sterno curiously. "What is that?" They have artificial fire starters in his century, but usually not in cans.

April stays back, mostly because fire and vampires don't get along well. (She will also make sure the children stay back).

"Fuel in a can. Folks use it a lot during camping."

That's Vic's concern as well, which is why she put it up on the counter where none of the little ones can get their hands on it. She lights it with a match, gives April the very longest skewer she has for s'mores.

"Makes sense. Not as efficient as we have in my century, but it works."

Jack has never toasted a marshmallow in his life, but he's watched Rose do it, so how hard can it be?

April takes her skewer and places a marshmellow on it. Holding it out towards the flame, to get the masrhmellow a golden brown.

"What d' they have in your time?" She too skewers her marshmallow, cautiously holding it far above the flame to avoid charring.

"Electronic fire starters," Jack says, pushing his marshmallow onto the skewer. "They have a version you can carry, or a version you implant into your palm and just hold whatever you want to heat."

"Clark has his own version of that... heat vision and all."

"That's really cool, getting to have it in your hand. That way, you can just touch your coffee when it gets cold. Dangerous, though, too... I assume there's a safeguard to avoid hurting living organisms, organic and inorganic?"

"Not a safeguard, but it isn't on all the time," Jack says with a laugh. "It's psychically activated."

"At least that way, you are never without a fire, when you need one."

"Yeah, but even so... it could be used as a weapon."

"That's by design," Jack says mildly, knowing that it sounds bad. "They were originally intended for military use. It's kind of like those vehicles they have in your time... Humvees? Civilians wanted them too."

April finishes browning her marshmellow, placing it carefully on top of a cracker and a chocolate piece, letting it melt before placing another cracker in place.

"A lot of common-day things aren't used to their original designs."

"Yes, quite. It's a shame, though." It's that scary thing Victor thinks of every now and again... the chaos, the violence that would come from everyone being exceptional (or at least, getting to buy upgrades like that). It's like having a concealed weapon without a need for a license.

It's taking her a little longer with the fire. She's being extra cautious not to burn her marshmallow.

Jack burns his marshmallow a bit, but he doesn't seem to mind. He lifts it up so he can blow out the flames, then smoothly mashes it onto his graham-cracker-and-chocolate combo. "This stuff is amazing. We don't have graham crackers in my century."

Once her s'more is cool enough, April shares it with Jonathan, letting him taste the new treat.

"No graham crackers?"

"That is a little nuts. Though, perhaps understandable, considering their origin."

She smushes her own marshmallow into her s'more, getting her fingers sticky in the process. She offers it to Anya first. Athena pouts, and starts to warble, but Vic says, "I'm makin' you one, too, don't you fret."

Jack laughs, a little delighted that she knows about that. "Naturally. You people from this century are so... repressed." He takes a big bite out of his s'more, half-closing his eyes as he savors the taste of the marshmallow treat.

"Not that there's any science behind it, but that never stopped anybody."

April doesn't get the reference. So she sort of feels unable to comment to the conversation.
