She can't go anywhere else. It's too late at night and the kids are sleeping and she can't go to Cole like this and she wanted to go to James with this because she knows he'd let her go off the deep end. He'd let her break. He's been waiting for her to break for years. And maybe that's why she presses Clark's number and not James'. Or maybe it's because her finger slips off of James' speed dial. Either way, there she is, outside the door.

She tries to make a fist to knock, but her knuckles are bruised and her swollen fingers won't close. So she whispers, "Clark," knowing that he'll hear her.

The Kent apartment isn't big enough for a guest room, but there are other options. "I'll get you set up on the couch."

"That's perfect." The couch is actually easier sometimes than the bed... she doesn't have to climb up very far, or scoot, or get settled. It's just the right size for her and her aching joints.

Clark fetches some extra sheets and a blanket, and a few pillows. He's slept on his fair share of couches in the past, himself. "Do you need anything?"

She shakes her head no, then scoots forward, wraps her arms around him gently (she's too sore to be any more emphatic), forehead against his chest. "I don't. Thank you."

Clark hugs her back, careful of her hands. "If that changes, I'm only a room away."

"Thank you." She slips off her shoes the way she usually does, by using the toe of her left foot to hold down the heel of her right, and wiggling it. That keeps her from having to bend down unnecessarily. Then she repeats it, right to left.

Clark leaves her to her privacy, but he keeps an ear out for her, just in case.

She lies down, bites hard on her lip to keep a whimper at bay as she pulls the blanket up.

And, she cries herself to sleep.

Oh man, I just got this image in my head of a few days after the confrontation of Cole helping Victor dress, brush her teeth, tie her shoes, and him saying, very slowly and patiently (because he knows that she hates needing help), "So what does this mean, honey?"

"I'm never, ever, ever going to do this again."

"Promise."

"Heavens, yes."

And her being extremely grumpy until she heals.))

((Let's see... we could do a plague but that might be too close to the Lorne storyline, we've done social upheaval already, we could always do zombies except that would break Victor if it were in her home'verse (one of these days, though, not at home, maybe).

Alien invasion? Invasion from a parallel universe?))

((I dunno, but talking about parallel universes did just make me think of Luthorverse again. Not thinking that we should jump straight over necessarily, but Clark Luthor has been doing experiments to see if Zara can jump universes. She's made it to the Kentverse and back several times, so he might try sending her to Victor's current homeverse next, since he has her old PINpoint and therefore the coordinates. We could maybe build off that somehow?))
