He blushes slightly and takes her hand gently.

She squeezed his hand.

"Thank you," he murmurs shyly.

"Ah, well." He smiles nervously and drops her hand, turning onto a small track that winds between the trees.

She stepped along behind him, carefully, quietly. She liked where she was, and she was content.

"There's a lovely little brook right through here," Pippin says, waving towards the woods in front of them.

She nodded, then craned her neck forward, straining to see ahead. "Sounds grand, then."

"I thought you'd like to see it."

"I think I'll like it very much."

He grins. The sound of water is now present.

She closed her eyes for a second, just listening, before opening them again. It was good sometimes to just listen.

"Come on!" He bounds ahead, ducking through a gap in the trees, and emerges beside the stream. Sunlight glitters off the surface of the water, and a water-bird is startled by his arival, cawing and flying away.

She laughed and squeezed through after him, stepping beside him and leaning down to brush her fingertips against the surface, as if to catch the light there and hold it for her own.
